WORLD WILD LIFE
World Wild Life is an interactive web application to browse, filter and explore 250 real animal species across 7 habitats and 8 geographic regions, with live IUCN conservation statuses. Vanilla JS front end with a Leaflet map and Chart.js charts, REST API on Cloudflare Workers with a D1 database and KV cache.
PROJECT DETAILS
Objective
The goal was to build a wildlife-discovery application backed by real data: 250 species across 5 taxonomic classes, with their habitats, diets and IUCN conservation statuses, explorable through an interactive map, charts and full-text search.
Technologies used
The front end is vanilla HTML/CSS/JS, with Leaflet.js for the regions map (real GeoJSON borders) and Chart.js for the distribution charts. The back end is a REST API on Cloudflare Workers, backed by Cloudflare D1 (SQLite) for data and Cloudflare KV to cache expensive endpoints (filters, stats, regions). The front end is hosted on Netlify.
Challenges and solutions
The main challenge was integrating reliable, up-to-date conservation data: a batch sync with the IUCN Red List API corrected 14 wrong statuses, complemented by a secure live route (token kept as a Cloudflare secret) for on-demand checks. Filtering strictly on the IUCN's global scope also required care to avoid mistakenly applying a regional status to a species.
